Inexpensive Shoe Storage

In a post last year called Shopping in your Own Closet each Season we showed some great shoe storage boxes available at Pinklily and the Clear Shoe Box Co.

This week I found a cheaper option available from Priceline Pharmacy. For just $19.99 you get a set of 5 shoe boxes or a set of 4 boot and shoe storage boxes. They're a great, inexpensive way to tidy the wardrobe up.

Seventh Avenue Market - Sydney

Each year Seventh Avenue holds a fantastic sale of denim and fashion labels for men and women.

The market's location this year is the Australian Technology Park at Redfern which has a massive area set aside for the sale. Parking is $15 all day, free for half an hour, or $5 for the hour your likely to spend finding the perfect budget piece. If you're working in the city you can catch a train to Redfern and exit via platform 10 which leaves you an easy (and safe) walk to the ATP.

Bright and Cheerful in Yellow

One of the easiest ways to update your wardrobe for a new season is to add one of the season's signature colours. Simple additions of this kind make you feel fashionable at an absolute minimum of cost.

For Summer 2007, one of the coolest new colours is "yellow". We saw it a little last summer, and it made appearances during winter - alongside grey and black, in rich buttery hues and mustard. This summer, you'll see it in all shades, from icy yellow to vivid brights.

If you don't have any yellow in your wardrobe yet, or you're not sure if it suits you, Colour Me Beautiful (a system of personal "colour" seasons which address how to wear your colours best) demonstrates that we can all wear a shade of yellow, as long it is the right shade.

For example;

- Winters can wear Icy Yellow or Lemon Yellow,

- Summers suit Light Lemon Yellow,

- Autumns can wear Gold, Yellow-Gold, Mustard, Pumpkin and Gold-tone accessories, and

- Springs can wear Light Clear Gold, Bright Yellow Gold and Gold-tone accessories.

I have added some new yellow items to my wardrobe, however as I'm a "winter", I am aware that anything beyond the icy and lemon yellows, won't really suit my complexion. If you're also someone who can't wear yellow a lot, then yellow accessories may be the answer! By adding items such as yellow shoes, bags, bangles, etc you can incorporate the latest colour, without detracting from your natural beauty.

This season, there are some lovely clothes and accessories available in yellow. Have fun experimenting with this new colour!

Metallic Accessories Made Easy

The beginning of a new season is such an exciting time! There is always new fashion and the latest trends to incorporate into the wardrobe. However, it can sometimes be tricky and not very cost effective.

This season, metallics are king! Whether you are a silver, gold or bronze girl, there is something for everyone, and I am always amazed at how all metallic shades go with almost anything in the wardrobe.

I remember when metallics appeared in the fashion cycle last - gold was definitely the prominent player. This time around, silver is the most popular as it complements the grey palette so well, and fits with the futuristic theme which is so big now.

If you opt for a metallic bag this summer, try and build up a collection of co-ordinating footwear. Consider some matching ballet shoes, flat sandals (like the Equp ones pictured below) and strappy high heels for the evening, you could even go for a two tone option in one colour with the right shade of metallic trim.

By having a selection of matching shoes, you can ensure you have one main bag for the season and you won't need to keep swapping its contents for another, just to ensure your bag and shows match.

However, if you would like more colour variety, you may like to go with a multi-faceted metallic handbag (like the Strandbags bag pictured above) which would work beautifully with gold, silver, white and possibly, tan shoes.

By building up your options, your favourite shade of metallic will become an integral (and effortless) part of your wardrobe for the season.

Unfortunately, we haven't been holidaying on a tropical island! However, we have been busy.

Kimberly has moved to Tokyo! This is so exciting - as the fashion there is quite cutting edge. You'll hear more about that soon.

Unfortunately, I've had the Chicken Pox, and coupled with family and personal commitments, have been way too busy!

However, I'm back, thinking fashion, and excitedly planning and shopping for the perfect summer wardrobe.

Even though I'm more inclined to shop at Myer, because it's local to me, I think that you can't beat the way David Jones do their parades. They have an amazing collection of designers and the fashion is cutting edge, with an international feel.

The DFO Experience

Many of you out there are no doubt veterans of the DFO (or Direct Factory Outlet) shopping venture.. but perhaps due to the kids and general time poor schedule, I have only just made it out there ... successfully!

Here's what I found: DFO at Homebush is best experienced without the kids and as early in the day as possible ... this combination is very thrilling and gives you a huge sense of achievement even if just for a quick fix.

I would recommend going with an idea of what you're looking for, as the stores are it. This is not department or mall shopping which is more enticing. I perused (among others) Esprit, Ojay, Nine West, Witchery, Ralph Lauren, Oroton, Table Eight, Charlie Brown, (Just Jeans closed for that morning) and found that while you are facing huge bargains, many stores also are precisely as described - outlets - which means they are carrying stock that could be up to 6 months old.

This is not a big deal, but if you are looking to save on very recent items, then sales in-store are best. I found Witchery carried a very tired looking stock, and Table Eight was mayhem ... bit like a hurricane had been through with all sorts of cheap, if cheerful cotton pieces. Sales at Ralph Lauren and Ojay mirrored their recent in-store ones but again, you needed to be purposeful.

Esprit had a great range of sale items and current coats and jackets. I liked their stock best and would go there again. Marcs also had a more current range and great prices too.

Truthfully, I could have shopped for a few more hours but I did come out with a gorgeous winter jacket from Esprit, dress from Ojay, shoes and bag ( half price) from Nine West ... then I remembered I have children who may need dinner that night.

Great fun, but definitely go with a list of items to check off and the possibility that you may have to compromise, if not on price then on choice. Anyone with more time and focus than me would have even more luck!

New Jeans for the Season

Following on from "skinny leg" and "boyfriend" jeans, Stretch High Rise (pictured) is due to feature prominently.

Personally, I love this look. Teamed with wedge-style platforms, a fitted T-shirt and cropped cardie. It's oh so feminine and sure to be a seasonal "must have"!

If you like going very fashionable each season with the latest jeans, you may find it makes sense to buy a cheaper pair than you are used to. If however, you prefer to stick to a very classical cut (like straight or bootleg) and are happy to wear them for a few years throughout all seasons, then investing in a more expensive pair would be feasible.

Unless you're going for an individual designer, I think Just Jeans is a great one-stop-shop for denim.

Jeans West are currently on sale with all jeans $59.99. They offer more variety for a range of ages, especially for 18-35 year olds.

If you're looking for more budget options;

Target offer great styles in their Hot Options and Free Fusion
ranges at good prices, including their own take on the high waist/wide leg (above), which is due in-store on 13 August.

K-Mart's Girl Xpress and True Blues range is also worth taking a look at.

Jay Jays offer budget priced options with the styles and cuts suited for teenagers best.

The bottom line is that jeans are no longer a stable classic, the styles swing wildly from one season to another, so choosing a high fashion look can no longer be regarded as a true investment piece for the budget fashion lover.

Summer 2007 ...

I know it sounds crazy while we're shivering in our cardis, but Spring really is around the corner ... especially if you're a Fashionista. You may have noticed even the chain stores are showing first Spring collections, so I had a quick look and this is what I found.

Similar to the Winter fashion stories, Spring has several strong trends which are mostly quite tricky, for example; lots of empire and baby doll silhouettes (prints are cute) or 60's/70's shapes which are shift-like and very short. There are strong geometric prints and the colours yellow/black and green are prominent ... and often appear together.

Are you feeling nervous? Don't be! Some very charming and more grown up looks are out there, but don't be in a hurry (especially as we are now in a cold snap). InStyle Magazine is a great read as is Shop Till You Drop.

We like new directions at Sussan's ... long basic shift dresses, with leggings. Some nice bold print tops, but not too tiny and cute. Great leather-look bags in metallic (Chrissy's new favourite accessory), and basic black cotton dresses. Prices are reasonable and the fabric is great for Spring weather.

Witchery have a new Summer 2007 look website, showcasing shorts, coats and shirts, in their customary neutral palette, gorgeous bags and basic tees in cobalt or turquoise accents.

Keep an eye out ... but do keep warm girls!

Costume Jewellery

A very important part of my wardrobe is the use of costume jewellery to make an otherwise classic outfit appear ultra fashionable.

Currently we're seeing bold and contemporary rings, bangles and necklaces in silver, crystal and resin. Just one or two pieces with any outfit are sufficient to make a statement, but if your aim is high impact try at least five pieces (like the girls at Diva!).

Some of my favourite dress jewellery comes from Georg Jensen, Mezi, Bouvier, Dinosaur Designs and Makers Mark.

Fortunately however, you don't have to spend big to make an impact with costume jewellery. There are some great accessory chain stores such as Diva, Equip and Groove, where you can find great little pieces to update any wardrobe.

This winter I've been taken in by the futuristic appeal of metallic silver and have been looking for inexpensive pieces to add to my wardrobe.

While popping into these stores during the weekly grocery shop I've often found items for just a few dollars. Diva currently have sales racks for under $5 and Equip and Groove are offering great reductions as well. Two of my grey metallic bangles were picked up for $4 and $5 and I've been wearing them throughout winter and they'll be great for summer too.

These little stores are always worth a quick look, it's amazing what a few dollars can do to update an outfit!

Nine West - 50% off all Shoes!

Wow! Nine West are on sale for the next two weeks at 50% off all shoes. There are also great reductions on gorgeous handbags and hats, some of them at 50% off as well.

Usually by this time in the season, there isn't anything I feel I need to buy, however at sales like this, I look for something stylish and classic for next winter (say black or brown boots) or I try to select something that will work well in the upcoming spring and summer seasons, like the shoes pictured here.

There are also some great handbags to choose from including the Simply Soft Cross Body in Bronze or the Simply Soft Tote in Gold.

However, I'm sure you'll find your own favourites at the Nine West sale!

Sweater dressing

I've struggled a bit with the sweater dress trend for this season - so as not to look like a cheerleader with children - and I've finally relaxed a bit with this style. I've been wearing the Stella McCartney for Target sweater dress - lovely shape but not an investment piece - with skinny jeans or leggings and ballet flats. I also have a pair of black trousers which must be 10 years old, tapered and very flattering, which work well too.

The trick seems to be - if you are over 25 - to make sure the pants you layer these dresses with have a very sleek and tailored silhouette, otherwise you end up looking like kids at the athletics carnivals, all bulky layers of skirts, sweats and jackets.

Also, you don't necessarily need a belt, the long line sweater looks fine with just a scarf or jacket. Jeans tucked into boots with this look is great too, as long as the jeans are well fitted into the boots.

My latest find in this trend - with just a bit more 'trend" as opposed to classic - is from Tightrope ... a synthetic knit with long bell sleeves and roll neck, fitted to just below the bust and only slightly A-line. In black, this top is great with aforementioned accessories and is only $24.95. Great trend buy!

If you really like this look Witchery have similar knits for $99, as well as cable knit sweater dresses and bell-sleeved cardis.

(NB: Some of these shapes are getting a bit too smock-like for me - gathered under the yolk - but if you work with the leggings/boots idea, it IS a groovy look - at least for a fashion moment!)

Winter extras

Now that it's actually cold, I'm looking around for some budget fashion 'treats" to zoosh up my coat/jeans/cardi ensemble ... some years we don't seem to get very wintry in Sydney, but this year has turned up a decent cold snap (fashionistas need variety) ... so I'm looking at gloves, scarves, caps and berets.

Try out the department stores, Myer and David Jones for accessories ranging from about $25 a piece. Discount stores (aka the $2 dollar shop!) often have cheap and cheerful beanies, scarves and mittens.

Sportsgirl have a great selection of scarves ... or go investment and check out gorgeous leather gloves in Alannah Hill starting at $60.

Often - I'm never quite sure why - local pharmacies will carry an excellent budget selection of scarves, berets, etc so keep your eyes open.

Tokyo!

I've just been to Tokyo ... a whirlwind visit which has been enough to whet the appetite for more. It's a very sophisticated and buzzy sort of place, but folks - the fashion! It definitely stands out. In the main shopping arenas and CBD these very chic locals, men and women, are out in force. (See Tokyo Street Style for some great pictures.)

It's spring and very warm so I saw lots of layers, bold 70's style prints, smock dresses layered over jeans and leggings, spots and floral, huge glasses, some metallic accessories but more white, cream and tan colours. Huge bags, often draped or pleated pieces. Very groovy, but also very stylish.

Sizing is an issue for us huge westerners so some stores don't work, but I did find the chain store Zara which is an excellent budget option. Zara is a Spanish label and there are many stores in Europe. It has a mix of useful basics and very strong trend items, eg. gorgeous printed chiffon tops, strappy singlets, sundresses, leather bags and shoes, more formal jackets and jeans ... fantastic and more affordable than say Burberry or Prada!

Gap clothing is also available in Tokyo which is a great store for more classic pieces: capri pants, white ruffled shirts, canvas and denim accessories, summer slides and ballet flats. This is just the tip of the fashion iceberg ... I came home with a black shirtdress, tan coloured capris, tan and rope flat slides, white shirt and T-shirt ... and had to restrain myself with bags (or my husband did)!

Booting Up for Winter

On a winters day, there's nothing better than a warm pair of boots to keep your feet dry and snug.

Of course, dress booties have made a big statement this year, looking gorgeous with opaques and skirts, as well as under pants. We looked at those in an earlier post called; Tights: Don't Leave Home Without Them.

However for something less dressy, I'm finding that a longer boot, mid calf or knee high, is more functional and warm. They look great teamed with tucked-in skinny pants or over opaques and a short hemline.

There are some great boots around this year, either in a high heel or flat. Take a look at some of the great options available:

For my current at home lifestyle, the casual flat boot is best. I like the slouch boot which can be turned up and pulled toward the knee or folded down and scrunched to mid-calf length. After seeing Icy's post, Shopping Report at Individual Chic, I found a great pair on sale at K-Mart for just $27 (like those pictured at right). They're warm and dry and look very now! Thanks Icy!

Cue Winter 07 Sale starts Thursday!

Warning ..

I have recently attended a wedding. So of course I had to get a dress, and shoes and a wrap, because it's cold in the sunshine when you are standing about admiring the view across the lawns ... and I confess, I didn't do budget precisely - but it depends ON your budget, so I was impressed with the end result, especially after trying on luscious dresses at Lisa Ho which started at $800!

You can spend huge amounts on evening or party dresses and of course this choice is also defined by how formal your event is. However, I want to rave about Alannah Hill, where I got said frock and matching gorgeous tights. I also purchased Pierre Fontaine peep toe heels which came in at round $60 and a pashmina wrap to finish it off. All these gorgeous items came in under $500. So what I'm wanting to tell is that for a modest budget you too can look red carpet!

Alannah Hill has these gorgeous frocks - that word seems very appropriate - with exotic prints, colours and fabrics, very feminine and very festive. I would normally be a tad overwhelmed by all that colour and excitement but as an event outfit they are perfect. My friend, attending two very formal weddings this winter is very thrilled with her purchase of a dress (matching fishnet tights are ideal to add a bit more pizzazz) and will be adding a cropped jacket/fur wrap from the range too.

These dresses are timeless in that Alannah Hill has a strong signature style ... not defined by seasonal trends so you have a great investment piece, for when those invites come in. The stores also carry bags, gloves, scarves, tights and stockings, hairpins and accessories, shoes and jewellery.

I would recommend a visit to one of her stores though, as the website is great but more like a magazine editorial, so harder to work out what's what.

I'm finding it's worthwhile checking out your favourite stores right now as sales and discounts can pop up at any time.

Yesterday in Just Jeans, I found a cotton Lightweight Trench Coat in a vanilla colour for $30 off its original price and a great style. There were some Black Velvet Ballet Flats - can't have enough flat shoes - for just $20 and I also found a new season cardi in grey for $69 (sorry no picture on their site for this one). Keeps me warm on early school drop mornings...useful and fashionable which is a treat!!

Admittedly, I had gone online first - to save some time - and found the discounts beforehand. I would definitely recommend a bit of forward planning and perhaps checking online or even calling your store if you are pressed for time, so that you know what you're looking for.

Next shopping trip might involve knee high boots ... stay tuned!

The Long Cardigan - One of Winter's Little Luxuries

For me, an oversized woollen cardigan conjures up images of a fireplace, loved ones and hot chocolate!

Imagine thick, woolly and warm, with cable detailing, tie waist and hood.

That's definitely the look to go for with this great Winter essential which can even be worn to work, with wide leg pants, a cap sleeve shirt and polished accessories.

To define shape, emphasise the waist with a tie belt and combine with skinny jeans or leggings or add a cardi to slim the silhouette of a pinafore or smock dress.

An oversized style can also look great with a short skirt and opaque tights.. Either ballet flats or boots add the final touch in footwear.

Shopping at Salvos & Vinnies Stores

It really is amazing what you can pick-up at these humble little stores in terms of pre-loved clothes and accessories.

Last week I visited my local Salvo Store and found a black REISS pvc (leather look) biker jacket at just $7.50! Yes, you read it correctly - $7.50!

I love the cut and style of the jacket with it's silver zippers and press studs and short, boxy shape.

I've been wearing it almost every day with jeans, but on Sunday (Mother's Day) I dressed it up with black pants, strappy silver platforms, a pale grey top, oversized silver-look bangles, and a black mock-croc tote bag. It looked fabulous.

This is the second time I've had success at this little store. A few months back, I picked up a grey metal necklace with black, maroon and clear beads, for just $8.50, and it compliments my winter wardrobe really well.

Kimberly and I have been tagged with a meme by Icy of Individual Chic on the question of Why I blog. Thank you for thinking of us Icy, it's always fun to share our stories.

Chrissy: Having been in the workforce for sixteen years, now I'm a stay-at-home-mum with two children under 5. Last year, my husband thought I desperately needed a hobby (that is, instead of ferrying the children around and shopping for fashion on a tight budget) so he suggested blogging.

Being in IT himself he knew he could help set me up and start me off. At first, I didn't think I could do it, having had no formal qualification in fashion, but that's the beauty of blogging - anyone can have a go and be their own expert.

Wanting to share the experience I asked my friend Kimberly (also passionate about fashion) to join me and that's how Fashion on a Shoestring came about.

Now, I love it! I just wish I had more time to spend on this new found hobby! I've found that blogging about fashion is just as much fun as shopping for fashion, and more importantly ... now, are a great complement.

Kimberly: Why do I blog? I love chit chatting away into cyberspace, sharing and gaining information on a much loved topic - fashion - and hopefully contributing helpful ideas.

It is generally carving out some sanity into my currently very domestic, full-time-mum lifestyle.

I also love the creative buzz and the challenge of pursuing this very elusive concept - being fashionable without spending millions. I think we are succeeding!

Trench Coat vs Parka?

Here is the dilemma ... do I want a trench coat (classic, timeless, etc) or a parka (funky, casual etc) for winter and beyond? I've been looking and checking out the budget on this one, and I'm still not sold (which is just fashion speak for why not have BOTH).

Trench Coat ... lightweight, rainproof (or enough to protect your Country Road suit), smart, regularly seen on celebrity fashionistas and photographed in Vogue under the heading "10 classics you should own". Best in beige or similar and while the Burberry tartan lining is the ultimate, any decent lining is good too. Black is fine but can look a bit ordinary in comparison. Therefore, if buying a trench, do your best to imitate the high-end labels like Burberry or Stella.

Ben Sherman, Country Road, Esprit, Sussan and Target, are just a sample of the many chain stores that carry great trench styles.

Even Avon is offering a classic black style (see picture) at a budget price of $39.99!

Our very mild weather is a good reason to own a trench coat and they look fab over jeans, suits and most dress styles, teamed with either heels or flats. Voila, instant style!

Parka ... here is a great look for the fashionista. Style.com have been snapping gorgeous girls in sky high platforms, leggings and seriously stylish parkas, quilted and trimmed with fur, in black, white, grey and tan, along with studded, glittery bags, and very dark sunnies. You may not want to emulate this entire look, but the parka does have a certain street cred, and will complement skinny jeans, leggings, and shift dresses. I like the metallic or gunmetal grey parka, with hood and drawstring at the waist.

We would suggest a little bit of investment goes a long way, especially in a more neutral colour, and if you don't like to feel "bulky", a good coat will go over skivvies or shirts. You cant have enough coats!

Twice a year, I search for a day bag to complement the key seasonal looks in my wardrobe. Aiming for the latest style and the most versatile colour, I can usually find the best value for money right now.

If you feel it's time for a new bag (Kimberly always feels it's time for a new bag!), there are some great new styles and textures available. This season, shape is more structured, size is dramatic (either oversized or smaller and very neat) and colours are richer, in grey, black, cream and metallic.

The Smock Dress Moment..

Last week I read a very funny article by fashion writer Maggie Alderson; who has a column in the Good Weekend. She addressed the real truth of a current fashion moment ... the smock top/dress.

I want to thank Ms Alderson, as it's often hard to separate the tricky- but - stylish trend, from one that really should be avoided. Her comment was ... that even if you are slender, younger and incredibly hip, putting on a smock or empire line top/dress is likely to make you look pregnant!

My reaction was - very sadly - that she is mostly right! I think what looks exciting in a showroom or on a catwalk, or on a photo shoot, surrounded by impossibly thin and definitely non-pregnant young women, might not always translate well.

(My husband immediately felt free to enthusiastically agree and said that he'd always thought so, and why hadn't I listened to him? )

So if your wardrobe is full of this cute, but sometimes unflattering trend, here are some ideas for making it work:

Wear a belt, sash or even a ribbon feature, just under the yoke as this can give the illusion of a high waist (as opposed to an empire line) and will flatten your torso out. (The dresses shown here are the same, but with the photo to the right, a belt has been added. Wow, what an instant slimming effect!)

Layer a a cropped jacket or long-line cardi to give some definition, or try a belted trench shape, or longer belted vest.

With this new realisation, I'm looking forward to finding my waist again!

Looking Glam in Maternity Wear

I had the opportunity to write a guest post for The Bargain Queen on shopping for maternity wear.

You may have seen The Bargain Queen recently on A Current Affair. She has a great website dedicated to sharing all sorts of ideas on how to save money.

Like all good wardrobes, your maternity wardrobe needs great fitting basics to form a foundation on which to build. A good quality black or navy skirt, slacks, dress or top, and a great pair of current style jeans are essential. You can then add fashionable separates to compliment these pieces with your personal style.

Sometimes it's worth paying for some good quality basics. For example, with my first pregnancy, I bought a very fashionable pair of Monica Monkhouse jeans and a classically styled pair of Materna Moda black pants. I got a lot of wear out of them during and immediately after both of my pregnancies.

However like bridal wear, maternity wear can often be expensive, but there are ways to cut down on unnecessary expense. There's a great store in Mosman, Sydney called Wear it Again Sam, a recycled clothing store for kids that also offers a wide range of recycled maternity wear. A friend recently picked up some bargains; a lovely pair of Monica Monkhouse 3/4 length pants for just $10, a pair of Belly Basics jeans for only $18 and a grey Mimi Maternity short sleeve knitted top for just $22!

If you're dressing for the office, it's best to steer clear of too many prints as they can look out of place. Also, you can still wear your jackets (classic or cropped styles) and coats (trenches, etc) for as long as they're comfortable, as usually they don't need to be buttoned up anyway. Wherever possible, favour stylish accessories such as good quality shoes and bags.( wear comfortable shoes while commuting and change into your dressier pair at the office on arrival.)

For more casual needs, Belly Basics make an excellent Pregnancy Survival Kit which includes a baby doll dress, a t-shirt, a skirt and either leggings or bike pants, all in a comfortable jersey fabric. The kit is available at department and maternity stores for around $165, but if you buy direct from Belly Basics you can pick one up for just $45!

Another handy item is the Belly Belt. It's a great way to keep wearing your regular jeans and pants, if they feature a button at the top. They retail for around $29.99, however if you buy them on eBay you can get them at a bargain price.

Also, don't forget to experiment with leggings (or footless tights) to give a longer, slimline look. They tend to look best if they extend to no more than 2-3 inches below the hemline or knee, as opposed to being pulled down almost towards the ankle. You can pick up an inexpensive pair at your local supermarket in basic black.

Finally, if you know your size in a specific maternity label, be sure to check out eBay. A girlfriend bought a brand new Ripe Maternity skirt in her size, for a third of the original price, through a maternity store which was clearing some of it's stock.

However, I would say that the best savings are made when clothing is borrowed, which happens a lot with maternity wear. I remember giving a girlfriend some clothes...in the collection was a striped football-style jersey which I had hardly worn. Afterwards, she told me she liked it so much that she wore it to the delivery!

Stylish Moments

As we've mentioned, Chrissy and I had a wonderful time being "styled" courtesy of Westfield's Style Sessions. We thought that it was one of the best time-saving and personally helpful fashion marketing ideas we've seen especially for busy girls.

We especially liked the smart trench coats, available at such reasonable prices. They included;

Sussan's also have a very stylish charcoal and cream check coat, $149.95 (pictured) which follows the current A-line shape favoured this season.

Also on show were a variety of excellent budget accessory options such as berets/caps, scarves and belts to name a few. We saw platform and ankle boots from Payless (excellent budget option for this season), quilted ballet flats from Katies, some gorgeous scarves from Ojay, Jacqui E and Sussan, and a range of groovy handbags from Strandbags. Westfield's What's What Style Sessions

Kimberly and I had a fantastic morning yesterday, attending Hornsby Westfield's What's What Style Session.

We sipped champagne and enjoyed a scrumptious hot brunch, while experienced stylist Sue talked us through 33 gorgeous outfits. Just like Westfield's stylist Fiona Milne does with the Westfield ad, Sue took eight key winter themes and demonstrated how to put them together. She covered the sweater dress, textures and fabrics, knits and layering, trench coats, swing and crop jackets, tailored chic, metallics and the 24hr dress, a look from am to pm.

Wow! All the work was done for us and there was such a lot of great information. Well done Hornsby Westfield!

We were also treated to a great Fashion Assassin tote/carry-all with some lovely goodies including a full-size Crabtree & Evelyn Hand Therapy cream, a Kikki.K pen and sample-sized Model Co Shimmer for face and body and an Armand Basi in Red fragrance.

Be sure to contact your local Westfield and get along to one of these sessions. They really are great value and lots of fun!

Is there any Alternative to Ballet Flats?

I didn't see myself wearing ballet-style shoes until recently. My legs are more like Mischa Barton than Kate Moss, and as this style sits low on the toes and leaves a large, sometimes wide-looking, area on top of the foot, I felt they were unflattering.

However, with all the lovely embellished variations available this year, I can see that with opaques, Capri pants, footless tights etc, almost anyone can wear this comfortable and versatile shoe.

Key features making their debut this season are; the bow (scroll down to see Zu Footwear's Zara shoe featured in purple), the open toe (Tommy Hilfiger shown below) and metallic (such as Witchery's Katie Ballet shown above).

The very flattering open toe draws the eye towards the tip of the shoe, as opposed to the ankle, and allows for some creativity with nail polish. Esprit have a great style which retails for $79.95.

This year, metallics are a great way to brighten up an outfit. I think silver makes the biggest fashion statement, and will feature in the winter palette as well as the coming summer one. Last summer, I lived in my metallic sandals, wearing them almost every day, as they suited everything!

I love scarves! They keep you warm, and will give even the most basic pieces a bit of a fashionable edge. They replace a necklace as accessory and - I love this - can hide any flaws in regard to neck shape, etc.

So ... what do I like this season? (I fancy writing "this fall "but given we don't use this term in Sydney I will hold back!)

A black, red or grey in a chunky knit, textured, stripe or metallic, lurex and delicate weave ... can all add style to an outfit.

We love the texture and volume of a knit scarf, with 'frill" effect (pictured) or extra width.

Scarves retail from around $15 in Sportsgirl or Just Jeans to $60 plus in Witche ry, Sportscraft, Saba, Ojay or David Jones. The Sportscraft Elastic Scarf pictured above is absolutely gorgeous and retails for $69.95. The David Jones scarf pictured left, is fabulous too and retails for just $34.95.

The best idea is to keep a constant look out ... build a collection, and they might just "zoosh" up a skivvy, jeans or a winter coat when you need them.

When you're shopping for a scarf think French chic ... it's a well known fact that those gorgeous Parisians are never without a scarf or wrap!

As we've noticed on Style.com, those chic front row fashionistas are bulking up with knits worn with their trench, cardi or parka, which is a great contrast to leggings and solid heels or boots.

Having finally got my head around how I want to dress this season ... recently, I found a very cute dress in a bold black and off-white colour scheme in K-Mart!

It has a large print, it is banded in black and has a black sash. It looks fantastic with leggings, wedges or slides, or for the colder months, with a poloneck, opaques and boots.

Though it's a cotton dress, the strong print and black base will work for our mild winter, and with 25% off the total was only $23.50.

After Stella - I have no complaints as my Stella pieces are lovely - but this was a reassuring budget buy!

Fashion On the Street

Last week, I was at a big women's event and had great fun observing the outfits on many of the women: looks on the street as it were, not just styled for a fashion shoot.

Leggings were a big feature. This look has been on the pages of magazines for over 12 months and worn with baby doll and high-waisted printed dresses and floaty sundresses. This look is wearing well and will translate into opaques for winter as a staple fashion item. (Something our European sisters have known for many years, but Australian weather hasn't always encouraged tights.)

Flat gladiator-style sandals and ballet slippers very popular in the casual stakes, and boots with dresses or tucked in jeans, were favourites, as well as platforms.. I especially liked the dresses with a slight A-line or pleated skirt, and knee length boots with either the turned over flap on top or the plain. While slouch boots are currently fun, I thought these classic boots looked very groovy.

Bags were either studded, slouchy leather or large, in tan, white, black and metallic. It was also nice to see belts on the waist with sundresses or skirts and layered tops.

This was not a "fashion" event so it was exciting to see fashion interpreted on real women-us!

Never be Afraid to Ask the Ridiculous!

Recently I saw a pair of metallic stilettos in a silver and pale gold combination at Williams the Shoeman. I thought they were gorgeous and they were on sale at just $39.99! As I had already spent my clothing allowance for the month, I decided to put them on lay-by with $10.00, knowing that I didn't really need them straight away.

The following week, as I walked past the store, I saw the same style on the half price table! They were down to $19.99! If only I waited an extra week!

Anyway, as I love saving as much as I can when shopping, I asked the sales assistant if it were possible to cancel a lay-by and told her the reason why. She said it was, and gave me my $10.00 back. Still knowing that I didn't need the shoes straight away, and swallowing my pride even more, I asked her whether I could put the same pair back on lay-by. She confirmed that I could! Wow! What a bargain!

Tights: Don't Leave Home Without Them

This autumn/winter, you can't go wrong with the look of tights (opaque tights are 70 denier plus as opposed to sheer) under dresses or skirts. They will instantly make an outfit look more fashionable and up-to-date.

Unlike the footless tights we saw during summer, opaques are full pantyhose, and give a longer, lean look, and of course, added warmth. Last winter, we saw them teamed with Mary Janes. This year, wear them with any heavy weight shoe, in a platform or peep toe, but not patent leather. It's best to keep it all black as black is definitely a major shade on the winter palette. [Note on 22.04.07: I recently broke this rule myself and found that grey opaques with black patent shoes actually work quite well!]

However, if you're ready to put a high fashion edge to your outfit, wear them with the short ankle boot, also know as "shootie" or dress bootie.

All major shoe brands such as Diana Ferari and Sandler, have their own versions, but if you can only spend the bare minimum, Target and Payless have great options too. My recommendation would be to buy in black, as you will be able to wear them under black trousers in future years and they'll always look smart.

If you work in an office which has a conservative dress code, opaques are a totally acceptable option to footless tights. Buy the best quality you can afford such as the Voodoo Lavish Opaque Tight (pictured) which are 70 denier luxurious microfibre. They'll wash and wear well and you'll probably only need one pair.

Also, try and keep your boots or shoes in good condition as you never know when they'll take centre stage again. This year I'm wearing a pair of ankle boots I bought at Nine West around seven years ago and they still look gorgeous!

Falling for Stella

The Stella McCartney for Target range and its release, has to be one of the most talked about in recent chain store history - in Australia at least. Queues of shoppers lined the footpaths for the 9:00am store openings yesterday ... which always guarantees a potential frenzy of purchases.

I managed to get down to my local Target at 10:00am where customers were still trawling through the offerings - though very politely. I picked up a few things, but the long line to the change rooms put me off (and having the youngest child strapped down, with donuts)
Target staff were beaming and said most of the range had been sold out. Seeing the armfuls of clothes customers were carrying about, people had obviously grabbed what they could. In the checkout queues people were remarkably patient; one shopper mentioned that their friends were buying up in different stores and ringing each other to get sizes when they ran out.

Nothing like marketing! However, I have to say that I'm not sure what all the fuss was about. I loved the idea of this concept - and I did find a great knit (tunic-style) for $119, which compares to Witchery and Sussan's long cable knits on offer in a similar price range. But in my view, the overall range was not adventurous, the fabrics - dare I say it - more Target than Stella, and they had a limited print and colour palette.

The dresses had great detail and interesting shapes and the trenchcoat design exciting, but the jersey knits seemed very thin. I sound a bit 'picky', but while one or two items were fun, I don't think Stella for Target is exactly a budget shopper's dream.

Chrissy got to her local store by 2:00pm and only got to see a remnant of the collection. She ended up straying from the Stella racks and picked up a pinafore dress on sale and a lovely top, at full price, but still very reasonable, without needing a Stella moment at all!

I'm sure Target were delighted with the outcome and it has made styling from an international label accessible to the budget shopper. I'm going to enjoy the sweater, but I wonder if we weren't taken in just a bit. If you did go overboard with Stella however, there's always the returns policy or eBay!

The Pinafore: a Winter "Must Have"

In my view, the pinafore, smock or shift dress, are "must have's" for the coming season.

I really enjoy the challenge of taking simple items and putting them together in varying ways to get different looks. These dresses allow for lots of possibilities, in terms of layering and accessorising, including mixing fabrics, colours and textures. However, I also like the monochromatic effect of the simple black and white too.

In recent fashion photo shoots, we've seen the dresses teamed with skivvies, shirts, leggings and tights, but as we get into the colder months, I'm looking forward to adding boots such as the dress bootie or the gorgeous over the knee designs on offer at Nine West (of course the longer boots will suit shorter pinafores best, as will slim-line straight leg pants instead of leggings or tights).

Almost every label has their own version of the pinafore. Country Road's Urban Career Range has some lovely smock dresses. There is a wide selection of black available in these styles, but look out for grey as it features prominently in the winter palette this year.

Fashion Fun with Sussan Knits

My guess is that we can all remember Sussan from long ago! They are certainly a mainstay of the Australian fashion industry.

While they interpret the latest looks conservatively, they still have some fun, slightly "edgy" pieces.

Of course, if your requirements are corporate styling, they are one of the better budget options for smart business wear.

This season however, I love the knits on offer as they provide a casual context for playing with the season's new proportions.

Layer them with fitted skivvies and T's, and spice them up with tights and flats or skinny pants and platforms.

I think Cue Club's Counter Culture newsletter offers the best advice about this season's new proportions in the article Turn Up the Volume; "To wear the new proportion with ease - only one rule applies. If there is volume on top - keep it straight and streamlined from the waist down. For the volume below - keep it neat and narrow on top."

Stella McCartney for Target

I have to confess, I am obsessing about the idea of a Stella McCartney piece from her collection for Target which is now available to see online.

I also went onto the official Stella site, to check out her Spring 2007 range which is very white, very short and very chic, and also to remind myself why Target is looking good price-wise.

In the Sunday Telegraph magazine, Tony Magnusson comments on whether this is the 'end of style snobbery".

Not so, he declares, and I agree ... even if you don't hold with high end priced fashion on purely moral grounds, I defy anyone even a bit taken in by fashion, to ignore the possibility of owning a luxury brand at a potentially - chain store price bracket.

Apparently, Kate Moss is releasing a range with the famous London chain store Top Shop - sadly not yet reaching as far as Aussie shores, but perhaps we can petition!?

With Stella, the hype is increasing over possible e-bay sales too, so I am suggesting that we queue now, or at least stand by.

Wishing for Glebe Markets

After popping into Glebe Markets on Saturday for some lovely Wish Clothing at reduced prices, I was disappointed to find that they weren't there! My apologies to anyone who may have gone searching for them as well.

Other stall holders mentioned they are usually located just inside the main gate, clearing end of sale items and excess stock. Anyway, keep an eye out for them.

Of course, Glebe Markets has the usual eclectic mix of new and pre-loved clothing and accessories. However, two labels really stood out in terms of great design, high quality workmanship and value for money. They were Stellino and Kuto Clothing & Jewellery.

Stellino (pictured) have two stores in Newtown and Paddington and are at Glebe Markets on Saturdays and Bondi Beach Markets on Sundays. Their range reflects current fashion trends, with many items which will outlast the season.

You'll find everything on offer is 10-15% off their regular store prices. Also, if you mention you read about them on Fashion on a Shoestring, they'll give you a further 5% off!

Kuto Clothing & Jewellery don't have their own store, but say they supply fashion outlets in Australia and the Asia Pacific region, as far as Singapore.

Their style is on the fringe of current fashion, with inspiration from European trends as well. They have a lot of "one size fits all" items which suit the smaller build.

Next time your at Glebe Markets be sure to look out for these labels.

High Tea with the Queen

Today Chrissy and I had the great good fortune to meet up with some other Sydney fashion bloggers, thanks to the organising skills of the The Bargain Queen who got SassyBella, CoolChiq, Slave to Shopping, Harriet (blog coming ...) and Rogue's Lifestyle Blog (from Melbourne) together at Swissotel (see the mouthwatering Grab Your Fork review).

It was fantastic to meet fellow fashion devotees all with their own slant and style on the addictive world of fashion. Great to chat, and with everyone from such diverse backgrounds, yet we all love to blog about fashion! Gotta love that!

Wish Clothing at Glebe Markets

Great news ... apparently Wish Clothing is available at Glebe Markets at reduced prices!

Glebe Markets are located at Glebe Pt Road, Glebe NSW 2037, in the grounds of Glebe Public School. They are open from 10.00am to 4.30pm every Saturday.

I'm told these items are not pre-loved, but rather more clearance stock. Of course, I'm guessing this will be summer items, and I'm hoping some of the autumn range will be there too.

It's definitely a "must see" in my diary for tomorrow!

Attention all Myer Shoppers!

If you shop at Myer frequently, then make sure you have a Myer One card. It isn't a credit facility, like the David Jones card, but rather a rewards based program.

You can earn 2 points for every dollar spent, and once you reach 2000 points you will receive a $20 Gift Card.

If like me, you have a local Myer store and you find you're always shopping there, then it's definitely worth getting a Myer One card, just apply online or ask for an application form from your local store.

You can imagine my delight when I received my first $20 Gift Card just the other day. I accumulated 2000 points since 1 October 2006, probably propelled along by Christmas no doubt.

However, my dilemma now is whether to put the card towards my favourite Wish dress for the season (pictured), or to buy school regulation sport shoes for my son who has just started school!

Oh, this is so hard!

2007 Oscars Fashion Favourites

My favourites on the red carpet at this year's Oscars had to be Reese Witherspoon and Cate Blanchett.

Reese looked absolutely gorgeous in an Olivier Theyskens for Nina Ricci gown and Van Cleef & Arpels jewels. Here, she has the look of natural, fuss-free beauty down pat.

I also thought our very own Cate Blanchett looked amazing in an Armani Prive mesh gown, with crystal detail.

Overall, I thought her hairstyle with both modern and vintage appeal was very elegant and her smoldering eyes and porcelain skin glowed!

Once again she shows us how stylish she is.

The Portmans Fashion Workshop held at the Glasshouse store earlier this month was a chance to see their Autumn/Winter range of corporate and fun fashion wear, while having champagne and nibbles.

Sweater dress - worn with leggings or opaque tights and ballet flats, or ankle boots and large tote.

Shift and pinafore dress - they're just above the knee which is ideal for the office, worn with a roll neck, light wool knit or a pussy bow blouse, and

Trench coat, belted high on the waist and a little more structured than previous years in a shorter 60's style. This is definitely a wardrobe staple but you may want to shop round for the ideal silhouette.

The colour palette for the the season is black and grey, with red, mustard and purple highlights. Patterned accents included tartan and leopard print and there's a touch of metallic in accessories as well.

Once again, layering is a big thing for winter, with leggings, skivvies, mini skirts, cropped jackets, etc there is a lot to play with as you explore the new proportions.

Also for the office worker, Portmans do a lot of great suiting with 2-3 different ones coming through each month leading up to winter. The fabrics are good quality and are sourced from France, Italy and Germany.

The Glasshouse, Miranda, Parramatta and Bondi Junction stores often run test lines, where you're more likely to pick-up limited editions.

They are also at Direct Factory Outlets at Homebush if you're looking for some great deals on summer items being cleared.

Whilst Portmans is definitely not high-end fashion, it certainly makes a great transition from the catwalk to very wearable pieces, with lots of street cred!

David Jones Winter 2007 Runway Fashion

Chrissy and I attended the David Jones Winter 2007 Collections Launch this week, with Megan Gale as compere. The shows were fun to watch and the Australian designers showcased were all brilliant, however the trick will be to incorporate some of the stronger themes into our everyday wardrobe ... without panicking about the new silhouette.

There are lots of empire-line mini dresses, sky high heels, cute capes, tweed, animal print and of course, black and grey are the dominant colour scheme.

We liked the idea of shift dresses and over sized knits and layering. A strong trend is the 60's A-line dress. These work well with skivvies, white shirts and polo necks and opaque tights or skinnypants underneath (see a Country Road look pictured).

A bold print is fun but we think a block colour is easier to start with and then you can add scarves, hats, tights and bags in check, tartan, hounds tooth or animal prints. Also metallic hues are still making a statement so you can use metallic accessories to liven-up a coat dress or jeans.

Animal prints are big this winter, a perfect accessory with the more uniform black and grey shades. We love the huge print totes, pumps and ballet flats, and of course black shades and a scarf will make you feel very glam.

My favourite "make Mummy look good" label, Witchery, have gorgeous long-line cable knit cardies, black jeans and zebra print ballet flats to choose .. you can definitely find very stylish pieces and new season accessories that wont break the bank.

While the new silhouette will be a challenge to many, it adds creativity and fun to the classic shapes we're all used to. We think this season promises to be really exciting as we experiment a little.

Bonjour to all faithful readers ... we are back onboard after - as many would know - the extreme sport known as School Holidays! This week Chrissy and I both started our first little chicks at Big School, so we are breathing a sigh of relief and fondly imagine we will be free for hours of blogging time. Of course, all mothers reading this will know we are delirious and will soon realise it's only going to get busier.

However, we are very excited about indulging you the reader and ourselves in as much fashion news as possible.

Here's what we have coming up on the calender:

Chrissy will be attending the Portmans Fashion Workshop so we will have some first-hand knowledge of strong winter trends and how to work your wardrobe - without of course overdoing the budget.

David Jones Winter 2007 Collections Launch and Fashion Previews which are a great way to see a range of fashion trends for the upcoming season. Keeping in mind that our coolest weather is not really till June, Australian designers are wonderful at bridging that long transitional period before coat and gloves time. Of course, depending on where you live, you may be able to extend the season!

Hot news: Superstar designer Stella McCartney will be releasing a small collection for Target Australia! We've heard it will be instore around March 12, but stay tuned. The full collection will be seen on the catwalk during the L'Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival in March.

And of course, we will continue to nominate our favourite budget finds each month, with recommendations and styling tips.

I am surrounded by magazines and brochures luring me with all sorts of treasures ... budget to total luxury. So to retain some sanity and Christmas cheer I've narrowed my wishlist down to a few delights.

NRA Australian Fashion Design Awards 2006

If you were able to catch last night's live telecast of the 2006 NRA Australian Fashion Design Awards you would have enjoyed a feast for the fashionista' eyes. We got to see future offerings of some of our key designers and to enjoy the creativity of some of Australia's newer talent.

The following top Australian designers showed key elements of their upcoming collections:

Alex Perry - a gorgeous selection of full-length formal dresses
Easton Person - featured beautiful silk creations, with peasant-style necklines, textured stipes and bubble skirts (very fresh and innovative) They had to be my favourite.
Jayson Brunsdon - sleek knee and full-length shifts for day and evening
Nicola Finetti - silk, tulle and organza dresses with intricate detailing and beading, and
Peter Morrissey - with more of his very stylish and wearable celebrity style.

Following that, leading Australian retailers, including Country Road, Sportsgirl, Peter Alexander and for the kids, Pumpkin Patch, offerred a preview of the hottest looks for 2007.

Also, an award for Fashion Excellence was given to Akira Isigowa for his outstanding achievements and ongoing contribution to the Australian fashion industry (some of his beautiful, timeless creations are pictured.)

Another fun aspect was the fresh new talent of some of Australia's rising stars in the industry.

Overall, Australian fashion demonstrated a distinctive flavour and excellence that competes well on the international stage.

It's Party Time!

Christmas and New Year celebrations are about to begin, not to mention some holiday time - with occasions to dress up or dress more festively than usual. Summer weather can really bring out the best in us, and this summer, there are some gorgeous, very girlie looks to indulge in.

I know all the magazines are full of wonderful party dresses and myriad options in shoes, bags and jewellery, but if you have limited time and budget, then we've found a few special outfits that can be dressed-up for the Christmas season.

You might need to go from office to party, or from home to a harbour cruise, but its possible to do this with some of this season's dresses. You might also be able to use acessories you've already bought, like strappy high heels (Target $39.99) or a fun basket style bag (Ojay $39).

I found some great budget fashion buys this week:

Target's broderie anglaise sundress - wear with wedge-style shoes or platforms and beads. Keep jewellery light and fun, no serious rocks here! There is a great selection of dresses available, with some under $60. Designers for Target have also produced some gorgeous pieces, they're a little more expensive, but definitely worth looking at.

Ezibuy 's latest catalogue has a great halter neck, A-line style sundress in jewel colours - coral, blue, and of course in black for only $39.95.

Ojay have some beautiful dresses - but be warned they are not exactly budget! They come in prints and floaty fabrics and are excellent for more formal occaisons.

However, the big surprise was Bloch's, the ballet supply stores - found in Bondi, Chatswood, Hornsby and Sydney city. They carry quite a range of flirty summer tops and dresses, mostly under $100. I found a fantastic dress for $99 in a strong print in turquoise/mauve/black or rose/black combinations, they were very smart and could be worn with heels and a tiny clutch or flat slides and larger tote.

If you do need to go straight from work, substituting a more sheer, printed empire line top and platform heels with beaded clutch (say by Jendi) will liven up your more classic skirt or pants. If you think the strappy sundress might need to be dressed-up a little, then take a cropped cardi and some bronze or silver heels.

Of course, don't forget costume jewellery: most chain stores offer current trends like large resin-look bracelet, or drop earrings for very reasonable prices. Think larger pieces, but one or two, rather than an armful of bangles.

With a little bit of creativity you can do the party thing without needing to replace the whole wardrobe! Enjoy the planning, shopping and dressing-up.

The Classic Dresser

I have a vision of a wardrobe full of beautiful suits and separates that can be mixed together at a moments notice. This is the secret of the invesment dresser - classic garments that are worth their price and will signify long-term quality and style.

This sort of wardrobe - apart from being my personal favourite - is timeless. It can't be denied that high-quality, well-made basics are classic pieces which hold everything together. For the working woman, choosing the right items will ensure you won't have to replace them every season.

The aim is to have a collection of quality basics, say in a light wool fabric, and in a single colour like black or navy. These can be mixed with a fashionable signature piece which accents a colour, a print or a style. For example; an animal or pucci-style printed scarf can glam-up a simple black camisole under a jacket.

A tailored pair of wide-leg pants or slim pencil skirt, a cropped jacket, a simple dress or a trench coat, are some of the most versatile pieces in the wardrobe and will take you through the Australian summer and winter and the seasons in-between. Cream or white suits are very smart too and usually look best in a long, lean look, but these usually require some major up-keep.

We really like the crisp white fitted shirt, a good suit (perhaps in a pinstripe or tweed look fabric) and solid leather accessories such as belts, shoes and bags. You may build this wardrobe up over a few years; checking out sales and factory outlets. Keep in mind these garments have a more classic cut eg. not exaggerated lapels, trims or colours.

It is also important that the cut of the garmet flatters the wearer as much as possible. If you have tried a particular label, say David Lawrence or Carla Zampatti (which have some gorgeous pieces this season) and the clothes always fit well and look good on you individually, then keep going back to that label to build your wardrobe basics. You can't go wrong!

For this year, you might want a platform shoe with your tailored skirt and some wooden or amber-look beads with a white fitted shirt. When some inspiration is needed, most magazines are now offering editorials which combine great high quality suits or separates with low-end pieces to give you that fashionable edge.

This is a good way to satsify any cravings for the latest trend, and even if you choose to spend the absolute minimum on those items, when they're teamed with one or more of your wardrobe classics, you will end up looking a million dollars!

This is a collaborative effort between friends Kimberly and Chrissy. Having worked in Sydney's CBD and North Sydney for many years, we know how hard it is for the fashion-lover to resist the urge to shop during every lunch-break. We're hoping that our blog will help you find ways to look fashionable on a budget, so you can achieve your other financial dreams.

It's also a fun way to get a "fashion fix" without leaving your desk!

Its a Cover-up: Beach Style

I am on a new mission - the beach cover-up look. In all honesty, with three very young children, I am not exactly at the beach on a regular basis, but we are going to be at least poolside ... and its good to feel you have just the right amount of exposure!

Before children you could arrange yourself in all the right positions and stay there without interruption, as well as taking along lots of tiny bits of clothing to match your bikini. Now I'm not saying that it is impossible with kids to feel good, but they're a lot more active, and you have a lot less time for yourself! I've noticed I'm not 100% comfortable roaming the beach/pool in just the cossie - for a number of reasons, not the least being a child pulling too hard on my top ... so I'm looking at a few options.

Kaftan top or Mini dress: Especially in low-end stores like Supre. There are a great selection of cute dresses which work well for the beach (or dinner afterwards with capris or jeans and flats).
Shirts: The long-sleeved voile, muslin or cheesecloth shirt which comes thigh length and this year, may have a drawstring on the hip. These fabrics are often a bit sheer and lighter than cotton. This style works well on narrow hips, or over some drawstring pants in a similar fabric.
Shorts: If you're confident showing a bit of leg, shorts are a fantastic option. Alternately, longer shorts are great too. Ben Sherman and Jeans West have some great possibilities.
Sarongs: We love sarongs! They are very versatile and come in a huge variety of prints and colours.
Pants: Drawstring sheer fabric pants either full-length or 3/4 are great too as they can be worn off the beach. If you have longer legs 3/4 pants look good, but an ankle length pair is best if you are shorter.
Denim Mini: If you feel a bit overexposed at the shopping mall, the beach or pool is where the denim mini is a great option. This summer there a variety of lengths and styles to choose from and the effect is very cool - literally- and a little bit funky especially if worn with bright coloured tank or even a kaftan style long sleeved top.

Big hats, big glasses and big beach baskets are de riguer!

Just a thought- if your swimming costume is a printed design go for a solid colour skirt or top- ie don't mix prints. Of course if your cossie is for eg brown, then you can choose some great prints.
From upmarket to budget the following stores will provide you with some great finds.

David Jones has a wide range of various cotton shirts and sarongs, as well as beach bags.

General Pants have mini skirts and currently a very fun tote bag with skull and cross bones prints and cane handles.

Witchery have great long sleeved cotton shirts with V-neck in orange white or blue.

Target have great 3/4 sleeved cotton shirts to mid-thigh, drawstring mini dresses and some very groovy designs in the Hot Options brand.

Scoop: Payless Shoes Goes Wild!

While we're on the "Animal Print" theme (see previous post), Payless Shoes have sent us some great photos of their upcoming new season's styles.

These are just some of the new shoes due in selected Payless stores next month (December).

The canvas flats will retail for $29.95 and would look great with casual separates in a solid colour like black, coral or denim.

The high heel platform pumps (which also come in zebra print) will retail for $49.95. These are fantastic! They can accessorise your pencil skirt and short fitted jacket for work, or complement straight leg jeans and a bright coloured top. Sussan have some lovely shell tops and empire-style plain t-shirts which are worth looking out for.

Animal prints can really give your wardrobe an edge. We just suggest you don't try and mix the print with other patterns or carry the same print as a theme in any of the clothes in your outfit. However, an accessory like a bangle or scarf with the same print could work well. Also, don't be afraid to wear them as a "stand-alone" piece in your outfit with, for example, a black tote with gold trim.

The Perfect Budget Handbag

Finding a well-made, budget-priced handbag, which still manages to be fashionable and stylish, can be challenging.

In a world where the look, feel and aroma of real leather (like coffee) can often be irresistible for a seasoned shopper, non-leather accessories are all but overlooked. However, Rosetti handbags are sure to satisfy the senses. They are styled in the latest contemporary materials and colours, they feel good to hold, and they usually have extra inclusions such as a cometic case, glasses case or wallet.

During the winter past, I found a lovely chocolate brown Rosetti satchel-style bag with front pockets, which came with a matching wallet. It was a fantastic buy - on sale at a mere $15.95(!) It was perfect for the season, except that the strap was a little too long, so off I went to the shoe repairer to shorten the strap so the bag sat snuggly in place under my arm.

Just last week, I searched for a tan tote bag that would suit my summer wardrobe, and again found a great Rosetti buy which fits all my requirements. At $35.00 this is one of the loveliest slouchy tote-style shoulder bags I've seen in its league. It includes a cosmetic case and glasses case and has well placed pockets to house the car keys, garage door remote control and mobile phone.

I'm delighted that it is so practical as well as stylish. Just today I teamed it with; wide-leg full-length black pants, a short crisp white jacket, leopard print scarf in tan and brown tones (tied around the waist as a belt), brown platform sandals and a chunky brown/amber coloured resin bangle (I love putting things together for the first time and having them come together perfectly).

Getting to Know your Favourite Store

With very little time to shop, it is very important for me to get the latest looks, without spending hours at shopping centres or driving to great lengths across town, to do so. I find that doing my research at home first, is the best way to start.

These days, I get inspiration from magazines or the internet, and I find that I'm useing the internet and the telephone a lot more in the decision-making and purchasing stages.

It's important to find out all you can about your favourite stores, as the modern-day fashion store is so much more than just the shopfront. There's online shopping, catalogues, special calendar events, private sales, loyalty programs, clearance outlets, telephone purchasing, discount vouchers, newletters and special offers.

Traditionally these have only been offered by large department stores, but now smaller chain stores and individual retailers are jumping on the bandwagon.

For example, a simple call to my favourite Veronika Mayne store provided me with some valuable information. I found out that they receive new items weekly, not just a big delivery of stock at the beginning of each season, and that they usually always have some reductions on items. Some Veronika Mayne garments are cleared at reduced prices through Cue Clearance at Direct Factory Outlets (DFO) in Homebush and Birkenhead Point Shopping Centre. So next time I'm looking for a nice Veronika Mayne piece, I'll start at those DFO stores - but I also know that new items will come into my local Veronika Mayne store regularly, so it needs to be on my 'regular visit' list too.

This sort of information is usually not advertised, so it's necessary to do some investigative research. You will find the cost in time and money minimal, but the savings you'll make are well worth the effort.

Leggings: Best Leg Forward

I have to say it ... leggings are an item this season, an alternative to bare legs or tanning lotion, an extension of the new skinnier leg jean and casual dressing ... but for moi? I'm not sure if I can pull this look off - this time around!

As a fashion student years ago, I (Kimberly) favoured leggings as an alternative fashion statement, and this current trend has a similar look - great designer whim, which can be harder to translate into high street wear.

(Chrissy has had some success wearing them under her stone and navy coloured trench coats with strappy platforms or ankle strap pumps.)

Last month's Shop Til You Drop magazine had designers waxing lyrical about leggings/footless tights as a staple wardrobe item, but I was relieved to read Nicky Zimmerman's comment "A cute and fun trend to embrace now, but not a long-lasting one".

Some great outfits can happen with footless tights but a word of warning. Without wanting to discriminate TOO much, we think this look works best on longer leaner legs, as sometimes, if you are shorter, the cut off look will not be flattering.

An empire line dress ie. nothing much past the knee - and sheer footless tights- which can be found in all the main department stores - with the gladiator sandal or platforms is a great look.

Milla Jovovich the model/actress/designer can be seen in leggings frequently with a softer pinafore or petticoat style slip dress. Ditto Lindsay Lohan in various baby doll styles.

The look is widely worn with a denim mini, and belted t-shirt, or with a softer mini skirt and fitted top which pays homage to the ballet look - worn with flats or slides and this season's bigger glasses and slouchy leather bags.

We feel the way to make it work is to deviate from the basic black if that would better complement your outfit. There are some great shades available and the key is to coordinate, coordinate, coordinate. Once the leggings are a part of the total look and fit into the outfit completely, they can make an outfit look fabulous (see these gorgeous looks from designer Anna Sui).

Enjoy the dress-up factor and alternative feel but if its all a bit awkward, there are plenty of other great summer stories to choose from!

How much would you Payless for Shoes?

It is amazing at how quickly Payless Shoes adopts the latest looks in order to offer a very budget-priced and fashionable, footwear option to shoppers. Just this week I noticed their own, very similar, version of the following popular styles by (clockwise from left) Zoe Wittner, Witchery, Tony Bianco and Wanted Shoes, at a fraction of the price.

Sometimes an inexpensive, yet current, shoe can complement an outfit; such as separates from Country Road, a dress from Saba or a dress and jacket combination from Cue - and look very much at home in the ensemble.

Unlike the US website, which offers online shopping and lots of pictures to support it, the Australian website is extremely minimal.

However, if you're into saving a few dollars, when you access the site, you'll see a $5.00 discount offer which you could use when making your next purchase - even if it is just for some ultra casual flatties!

Super Stylist: Shopping with a Friend

Today I was a personal stylist! For about an hour and a half. I went shopping with my friend Angelina whom I've known for many years. This longevity has resulted in one of the strengths in our friendship: being able to speak with-mostly-absolute freedom in regards to fashion (if not everything else).

We have quite different personal styles, eclectic versus classic, professional vs stay home mum, but this can work in a very complimentary way, with a new perspective and fresh observations that on our own we might not see.

Today we were looking to add a bit of "zoosh" to Angelina's more working-day wardrobe: perhaps liven-up her more comfortable choices with some new shapes - for example; a cropped cardi, fitted layer tops, 3/4 pants, etc.

Angelina has gorgeous taste and some great modern classics, but sometimes feels she is getting a bit staid in her mostly black, tan or white choices. For me, Angelina provides inspiration to slow down on the "girlie" budget pieces and look for items that will not just suit the moment but actually last ... not just financially but style-wise too.

So I'd like to encourage you all to take the time and the possible risk, to shop with a great friend, one who is not afraid of your wrath in the dressing room when pleading (like today) empire line tops don't always make you look like you're expecting. And one who can enjoy your love of any sort of striped garment, preferably in navy. If you include the latte/cappucino break, people watching, trying on platforms and hats....it all makes for a great day.

I would like to report success from today's excursion. ... I purchased a Witchery cardi and a Seafolly Bikini, which was an unexpected achievement, and made possible only through long-suffering friend answering the - though I tried to rephrase it intelligently - age old question; "Does it make me look ..." I must have heard the right responses, and got a thumbs up from my husband later on. Angelina, who has great legs, settled on some black leggings, and a denim mini skirt. Go girl!

Review: The Devil wears Prada

EXTRA EXTRA ... On the Must Do List:

I just saw the movie "The Devil wears Prada" and would highly recommend it to anyone who is even remotely taken in by fashion and the allure this elitest world holds.

Meryl Streep plays the editor of the fictional "Runway" Magazine, where our confident but naive - journalist -turned- fashion- assistant works. Meryl Streep is diabolical and yet watchable as the absolute hub of the fashion universe, a law unto herself and with no scruples whatsoever, at least where Runway is concerned.

Assistant Andy (played by the beautiful Anne Hathaway of the Princess Diaries) is endearing, hopeless and finally both taken in by fashion and wised up to it. The dialogue is laced with all sorts of fashionable name dropping, bolstered by gorgeous clothes and locations and overall is great fun.

(For anyone who's read the book, this is a much lighter and more feel good version, with less venom and more humour. We'd love to hear any opinions)

Put Some Colour on your Shopping List

Every few seasons in 'fashion world' the colour thing happens! I think you can usually see it coming ... after a more sombre direction such as black, grey and khaki now we are welcoming neons, bold brights and (this season) strong prints plus some very solid primary colored accessories. Which can be a bit challenging for the uninitiated. Especially if you've got settled on a few white t-shirts, black singlets, a denim skirt and, maybe a sarong from Bali, and wonder if you need a university degree in mixing and matching the tonal shades.

I have an idea as to how we could survive this new fashionable moment. In Australia where the sun shines all the time and colours are very strong, I think we need to embrace colour. It suits us and our environment! It's also a lot cooler than wearing too much black, particularly during the 6 months of warm weather we have.

In winter we enjoyed accessories that were mostly black, so why not start off this colour revolution with neon shoes and bags, or at least in a jewel or pastel shade.

Colours like blue, raspberry and lime, or fabric/cane combinations, can accent a colour and complement your print dress or skirt, pastel cardi or striped tee without excess effort.

If you like making changes more slowly, then go for an elaborate print or embroidery bag, stitched and detailed, which will liven up a denim outfit or more casual capris and shirts.

Return Policies are a Busy Girl's Best Friend

My husband jokes that I purchase 6 outfits and return 7! Hey, I'm not that bad ... but I must admit I do love to shop for clothing and accessories. For me it's the whole experience, even the "umming and arring" that I enjoy, not just the final result.

Unfortunately, I don't seem to have much time for fun shopping lately. I have to snatch a half hour here or 10 minutes there during a grocery trip. Often, I make quick purchasing decisions (or impulse buy) in order to go home with something, as I know there won't be any occasions in the coming months when I will be able to make a day of shopping with a girlfriend.

Because of this, I've found it important to take some time to be sure about my purchases (albeit at home), as they have to be a functional addition to my already existing wardrobe. I love adopting the latest fashion in any given season, but the problem is that I'm not built like Gemma Ward (our very own Aussie supermodel pictured)! I have to carefully deduce which version of the bubble skirt, ankle length tights/leggings, high-waisted pants, etc would suit my size, shape and style best.

Sometimes I can't even try things on the minute I get home as I find I'm in demand straight away (kids!). I usually have to leave it for a quiet time when I can pull out complementing pieces and see how they work together. Often, looking at the purchase again, in a relaxed atmosphere, without any sales pressure and in natural daylight, all means that a better decision is made in the end. On the odd occasion when I'm still not sure about it, second opinions can be solicited at home, usually without any ulterior motives.

Since I often need to return an item, I've had to start shopping more often at stores which have a "no questions asked return and refund policy". These are usually chain-stores like; David Jones, Myer, Sportsgirl, Jeans West, Target, etc. Smaller boutiques usually allow return and exchange only and so I will only make the impulse purchase if I'm 99% sure.

At the end of the whole process, if I feel the garment doesn't do enough for me or my wardrobe, I can return the item to the store, without any guilt whatsoever. The best thing is that even though I might not keep the item (which doesn't happen very often), I still get to enjoy the whole process!

Shopping in your Own Closet each Season

I've never liked throwing out my old clothes. They're just too valuable! I prefer to keep them and use them when they're back in fashion.

Over the years I have given away a lot of clothes to family or friends. Sometimes my mother would take them home and disperse as she saw fit or (much to my recent delight) keep some of the better pieces for a later date. With this discovery, I have reclaimed some classics which are quickly becoming an integral part of my wardrobe. This year it has been; black peeptoe slingback platforms, a classic beige trench coat that looks very Burberry, and the original Ray Ban Wayfarers (all in great condition).

So when I read Kathleen Fifield's article called "Shop Your Own Closet" in July 2006's InStyle I felt vindicated! Finally, an article in a fashion magazine which doesn't suggest throwing out everything that hasn't been worn in the last six months in order to make room for the new.

Kathleen shares three key steps in setting up your wardrobe to ensure you create some exciting looks with your current clothing, before going out to get the latest and greatest must-haves for the season.

She looks at:

what to keep, what to throw out and how to update your favourites,
how to inspire new combinations and looks, and
how to organise your wardrobe so that it's practical, useful and appealing.

Here are some things that have worked for me:

At the beginning of each season, I check what I have in storage and pull out items that reflect the current shapes and styles. (Just last week I retrieved a navy and white pinnafore, denim capri pants and a lightweight red and white stripe boat-neck knit.)

I pack away anything I'm NOT planning to wear, such as last season items, or anything that's not currently "in style" (fashionspeak for "Wearing this will date your look as soooo 2003! "). As I don't have much closet space, I use old suitcases for storage.

Finally, my closet is free of clutter. With what is left, I group like colours and items so they are easily identified. For example; I hang pants, jeans and skirts together, while folding or at least grouping tops and shirts. I also group light and dark colours and fabrics.

I store shoes in shoe boxes, but there are some great plastic boxes available like those from Pinklily or the Clear Shoe Box Co. They are a great space-saving solution, they allow clear visibility and keep shoes clean and tidy. (I find that if you do look after your shoes, eventually you will be able to wear them again!)

I also try to make sure accessories like scarves, belts and bags are within easy reach. (Kimberly likes to store her bags in store carriers - of course if we had acres of shelving they would be on show!)

As there is less to choose from in the final wardrobe, the majority of items can mix and match more visibly and putting an outfit together becomes a lot easier.

I really recommend a little wardrobe organisation. It certainly minimises the need to rush out and buy new clothes at the beginning of the season, and inspires you to look after what you already have.

Got your Bag Girls?

In fashion I think we have personality types, not unlike the psychological profiles now required by any 21st century employer. You might be the shoe queen, unable to resist sales which fill your closet space with shoes you rarely wear. Maybe its lingerie, maybe its jewellery or t-shirts or vintages scarves. Or makeup - you buy the one or two items required for a free offer and thus your bathroom drawers are spilling out with sample night creams and lip gloss.

Or it might be bags. Handbags, totes, baskets, clutches, beaded evening purses. This is me - I'm a bag girl. Preferably larger bags; I'm tall enough and have the snail mentality where carrying your home or most of your makeup/books/glasses/diary/unpaid bills/phone/suncream etc is a priority. I love changing my bag depending on how I feel; if I'm wearing jeans but a different bag I feel so much better! ( I'm thinking as I read this that three kids at home for the last few years has caused some serious brain damage ... but you get the idea)

Actually I was thinking through the why of the bag fascination and I dont think its just about how much I can take round with me. The accessory is the complement to the outfit- not sure if I just made that up - and if my outfit is ordinary, (in my mind) then the bag takes on a whole new meaning as my defining fashion statement.

That all sounds very serious .. .but there are other people out there just like me, I know it. My daughters are showing signs of the same addiction - they carry round all sorts of stuff in tiny little pink bags, drawstring library style bags, store carriers, baskets etc. I read somewhere that there is a sort of status one can aspire to; if you can't have the whole look/label then having a great bag still indicates you are a mover and shaker.

So at all levels we can meet our fashion needs with a new bag! Of course those who feel this way about new china, linen, collectible perfumes, nailpolish, etc please bear with me.

Back to the new season ideas: In order to satisfy the bag mania I looked around for a few styles that are great for Spring '06. You can either break the bank or go budget but either way enjoy.

I looked mainly a good sized bags, white or tan, buckled, or otherwise decorated ... a variation on what designers have been sending down the catwalks for the last two seasons. These are bags that can carry luggage: while oversize looked good on the runways we don't necessarily want to be lugging anything requiring a trolley to assist. So thinking bigger but not OTT is best.

First off, Oroton have gorgeous salmon, creamy white or black, discreetly studded in a large hobo style- in very soft leather around $599.

Then I looked at a great store, Bag & Baggage, which holds all sorts of labels from Charlie Brown to Cosgrove and Beasley to Fiorelli. Excellent price range from $50 through to several hundred. Lovely squishy totes, enlarging on the bowling bag style, double strapped and buckled or even patchwork leather-look Hobos or smaller structured styles.

A favourite investment for me right now would be Witchery leather bags: round $189 for tan (like that pictured above) or black leather in sophisticated shapes and detailing.

At a shoestring end, we also love what's available at Strandbags ... good looking accessories ranging from evening purses, tote bags (pictured in white above), leather look handbags, hobo style- a huge variety and under $100.

To start off your spring wardrobe a tan or lighter colour bag with lots of details, incorporate cane with leather, mid-size to roomy, is another great way to revamp. I also have a pale blue bulky handbag with loud gold buckles which will be great fun with Ibiza style slides and a white sundress ... don't be afraid of colour girls! But that's another story!

A key Look for Spring/Summer '06

While attending the David Jones Fashion Previews for Summer 2006 with Kimberly, I jumped at the opportunity to meet Kerrie Alcorn, editor of Shop Til You Drop and ask her about the key looks for the season.

Shop Til You Drop has to be my favourite rag mag! For those of us who don't have the time to browse for hours anymore, all the hard work has been done.

It's the ultimate shopping guide for the season, with pages and pages of fashion finds each month. It has great suggestions for everyone, regardless of their disposable income and every item shown is sourced, sourced, sourced ... with the cost, designer/supplier name and telphone contact.

So when I had the chance to ask Kerrie what would be big this season, she said:

"... a key look this season will be the printed dress and there are some great examples here from Veronika Maine (pictured) and Mint."

You'll find that there is an endless supply of lovely dresses to choose from this Spring/
Summer. All your favourite shopping haunts should carry their own versions of the printed dress, but here, I've looked into two options for the "cash strapped" and "time poor".

Ezibuy is an online shop with a mail-order catalogue. They have an extensive range of clothing, including some accessories. The prices are very affordable, however you will need to factor in postage costs, etc. Pictured below are some of the dresses they offer that reflect some of this season's key looks, including the popular shirt dress.

Target have an extensive selection of dresses this season as well. I keep being amazed at how extensive and quickly they carry the latest looks for each season, both in clothing and footwear. Target now has a Shop From Home facility which allows you to make purchases off their sales catalogues by calling up a home shopping store in your state. Of course their prices are very reasonable, and you can pick up a bargain through their catalogue sales.

I'm really excited at the prospect of dresses playing a major part in my wardrobe this season. They're very simple and yet very stylish. There's no need to match tops with bottoms or work out layering. A lovely summer dress, some oversized sunnies, a great pair of shoes (either some metalic flats or earthy platforms) and the latest tote, means you can head out the door with lots of style and a minimum of fuss.

Minimising your Risk with Killer Heels

I'll be the first to admit that the fashionable shoe offerings of each season are not always designed for comfort and practicality.

If you've ever worn heels to work and walked the pavements in your lunchbreak, you won't be a stranger to the tension and headaches you can experience at the end of the day. (I know that many of my chiropractic visits have been a direct result of my not-so-wise footwear choices a day or two before)

So, if you're like me and love the latest fashions, you've probably thought about how you can get away with wearing those strappy platforms while minimizing the negative impact on your body.

But, as Sarah Price and Glynis Traill-Nash point out in their Sun-Herald article Pain, the Achilles heel of this fashion trend, it can be a challenge when faced with the onslaught of rising heels:

SOME say fashion is pain. And with women's high heels hitting dizzying heights, it is something the fashion conscious are going to find out all about.

The craze has already hit Britain, with some heels reportedly as high as 13 centimetres.

And the trend is coming to Australia. Jasmine Bingemann, business manager of footwear and accessories for Myer, said a 10.5-centimetre platform peep-toe was the retailer's best-selling shoe and was a sign of things to come.

As I would never dream of going extreme, I wouldn't suggest total abstinance either, and I'm a firm believer that the very latest heels for the season can update your wardrobe instantly. I recommend coming to something of a compromise!

Here's what I suggest;

Choose not to wear your heels all day, but rather only for the high points of the day.
Have a comfy pair of shoes available to change into in order to give you some respite, in-between (for me, this would have to be a pair of Hush Puppies).
Throughout the day, take time to stretch your feet and calves, and to rotate your ankles.
Unless you're wearing your heels to work, I wouldn't spend a fortune on them, they're only for a season or two, and for cameo appearances.
Minimise what you're carrying baggage-wise, just take along the bare necessities in a little bag.
Finally, if (like me) you already have suffered from pain, go see an expert, don't just put up with it.

Show Time

We had the great fortune of being able to leave behind husbands and children and check out the David Jones fashion parades for Spring/Summer 06. Actually I exaggerate as my 3 and 5 year old daughters unexpectedly accompanied me - at this point can I say a big thank you to David Jones staff as they were fantastic and made my girls feel very special.

However back to the show, clutching our goodie bags and champage( OJ for the littlies!) we enjoyed viewing some great summer stories. Including nautical, whites, a huge range of prints, very pretty dresses, belts firmly buckled up and overall a very ladylike and dressed look with a bit of St Tropez sex appeal thrown in.

My favourite is the Witchery line: I am often torn between what I like to wear and what in my every day life I am needing to get round town in. Chrissy and I often lament the casual element that creeps into mum-at -home wear, but we also feel that you can get round this by occaisonally succumbing to more glam pieces to wear with jeans and heels, or with great accessories.

Back to Witchery: their clothes are simple but striking and suit me as I'm a more influenced by an urban street cred look( thanks to my husband for that terminology -a more interesting way of saying casual?). My favourites were a gorgeous printed sundress, a delicate knit cardi and a range of bronze and white flat sandals and slides.

We also loved Veronika Maine for her prints and very modern shapes: I will be looking for some great dresses when summer hits, which can be dressed up for pm and still worn round the playgroup set.

When new season styles appear one of my biggest dilemmas is how far to follow the trend vs only buying serious investment pieces that can be taken out either every few seasons or worn regardless. Do you throw out your stiletto heels for platforms only? Do you rush to buy beaded caftans and then only ever wear them to the beach?(guilty)

Do you purchase skinny jeans only to realise a)you never suited them first time round b) a bootcut is still acceptable as long as it's dark denim.

I'm going to be chewing this issue over in future posts but here's an example:
The trench coat or belted macintosh fabric coat, a modern classic, originally by iconic British label Burberry, and now available from any number of local stores eg Jag, Esprit, or Sportscraft. I think if investment dollars are available, the trenchcoat is a must. However the bubble skirt/dress, while a current standout fashion moment is unlikely to have a long life or be particularly versatile, so this look I would only consider on a budget basis.

Getting your Feet Fit for Spring

With the arrival of Spring/Summer, we're greeted with an enticing array of open, slinky footwear! Nine West's platforms and wedges, particularly Studio 9 (two of them are pictured here) are truly a feast for the eyes.

I don't know about you, but after experiencing "foot hibernation" in the winter months, I'll need to activate "damage control" if I have any hope of wearing this season's offerings with some level of panache! If you have the same plight, read on ...

Here's my best tip so far; you can spend anything from $40 to $100 on a pedicure or get your feet properly looked after, and visit a podiatrist.

The difference is that your podiatrist will deal with dry skin, corns, and toenails (if necessary) and will leave you with feet that not only look better, but that actually are better too!

From a budgetting perspective, a visit to your podiatrist can really pay off if you have an 'extras' inclusion in your private health fund. You should be able to claim your podiatrist visit, leaving you with a smaller bill once your rebate is applied.

The way I see it, later the same evening you could pamper your feet and polish your toenails, and come away with feet that look completely stunning at a fraction of the price of getting a professional pedicure, and you will have dealt with any real problems your feet may have.

The end result is that you can feel confident wearing all that gorgeous footwear!

New Season Panic Attack

Here's what happens to me - the days start to dawn just a little bit warmer, you can feel the sun on your face (where's the 30+ factor sunscreen and any hat not completely out of shape?) and there's a feeling of NEW- new season, new clothes, new LOOK ...... at which point fashion planet and all participating outlets and magazines obligingly go "ga ga" on these new looks, new trends, new colours and how YOU will look like a dodo if you aren't decked out head to toe by August 15. (For those women who don't suffer from this particular affliction, you are BLESSED.)

I then get a corresponding feeling of weakness because; a) I need to revamp the entire wardrobe as well as buy food and pay school fees, and nothing is adding up. b) more of the above.

I hashed out what I could live with already in the wardrobe (of course saying NOTHING - really loudly - doesn't work, unless you were pregnant last summer ... and even then ...) after which I succumbed to pressure and went shopping.

Here's what I (Kimberly) bought:

1 pair of black capris,
1 print floral shirt in that crushed cotton you need to dry twisted up,
1 long sleeved stripey top - black and grey, though I later saw red and white which I liked better,
1 pair black slides, on sale.

As I currently wear a lot of jeans and layered tops, these items can mix and match (love that phrase, so 70's). Also, I found from last summer a pair of wedges and a drill cotton long sleeved jacket, safari style.

The items listed cost about $200 in total. I would definitely say you could pick up the capri trousers or similar long shorts from Target for half the price I paid. Also, I plan to lengthen the wardrobe life of my swirly peasant-style skirts with a belt and cardi and longline T.

You may think all that fuss for what? But, along with a new bag - a present! - I now feel equipped to get through the next few months.

I shopped at chain stores in the mall, and while I love the idea of a trawl through markets I am way too strapped for time and nearly always have someone under 5 with me and that means shopping is a high energy - no messing around - byo coffee experience.

I love the idea of shopping online - and love surfing the net, being enticed -but be prepared to pay postage/delivery and maybe return it due to fitting issues ... unless you find a label or site you really trust. Anyone with such a find please share!

Feeling your way fashion wise into the new season is a precarious, but rewarding journey and does provide a certain escapism. As a fulltime mum at home escapism is big on my list!
